Did you recently rebrand?

We did! We used to be Better Than Fiction, Salem Walking Tours but in 2024 we rebranded To Salem Uncovered, Historic Walking Tours.

How long are your tours?

Our tours last 90 minutes.  Private tours can be from 60- 90 minutes.

Where do we meet for the start of the walking tour?

1 Houdini Way, Salem Mass (Across from Nocturne)

What do I need to check in?

You just need your name, and our Storyteller will check you off the list. However, it's always handy to have your confirmation e-mail available.

How much walking is involved?

The total distance of the tour is about 3/4 of a mile. Each tour has between 5-7 stops that last between 10 and 15 minutes.

What makes your tours the best?

We don't just tell you names, dates, and facts.  We tell you a story.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?

It's not necessary, but highly recommended. With group size limitations, tours often sell out (esp. in October). To ensure a spot, please buy in advance, our website does update in real time. If there is room you are able to purchase tickets when the tour begins.

Do you guarantee we will enjoy the tour?

Yes.

If a tour is sold out, can I get on a waiting list?

Unfortunately, we do not offer a waiting list. However, please do not hesitate to contact us to see if we can fit you in.

Do I need to bring anything on tour?

All you'll need is yourself, a sense of curiosity, a willingness to learn. Also, it's New England, it may rain, it may snow, it may be dreadfully hot. Please check the weather and dress appropriately.

Are we allowed to take pictures?

Of course! What better way to capture your story than with a picture, and of course we want to keep sharing so don't forget to tag us on your favorite social media platform @btftours.

What is your late policy?

PLEASE, arrive 15 min prior to the start of your tour. We understand that parking can be tough and lunch can run late. However, after our brief introduction, we have stories to tell and places to see, and we do leave on-time. We will include the location of our first stop in your confirmation e-mail just incase.  *Please note that refunds are only given with 24 hours notice

What if we want a private tour?

We happily accommodate private tours! (Student groups, corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties, or even just out-of-town guests).  Please email us at info@btftours.com for more details.

Are tour gratuities included in the tour price?

We do not include gratuities in the cost of our tours.  If you enjoyed yourself, gratuities are greatly appreciated, although never mandatory, and happily accepted by your storyteller.

Are bathrooms available during the tour?

No. There are several public restrooms in Salem for your convenience before the tour (Artists Alley is the closest).

Are children allowed?

Parents know their children best, and we leave it up to their discretion. However, much of what we talk about can be disturbing. Torture, murder, executions, the imprisonment of children are a few examples.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely!

Are the tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the tours are wheelchair accessible.  All of our tours utilize public sidewalks and roads.

What happens if there is bad weather?

Our tours run rain or shine. However, we will cancel if there is a state of emergency by the city or commonwealth. In these instances we will offer a refund.

What's the Cancellation Policy?

Tours may be canceled up to 24 hours before the start of the tour. Any tours canceled within 24 hours will not be refunded. BTF Tours will only cancel a tour due to a state of emergency.  If your tour is canceled, you will receive a refund.

We are unable to delay the start of the tour if you are running late.  We are not responsible for traffic-related delays.  We will attempt to rebook you on the next available tour if you wish.  If unable to, then our cancellation policy above will take effect.

Where is the best place to park?

There are three different parking garages in Salem, several metered lots downtown, as well as metered street parking. Honestly, Google is going to be your best friend here. Just be sure to give yourself plenty of time to park, especially in October.

Where does the tour end?

Salem is a a lot smaller than it seems.  Our tours, (for the most part) go in an almost circle. We do not stop where we start, but quite close. Our storyteller will also happily point you in the direction you need to go.

Is the tour offered in different languages?

Not at this time; we only offer tours in English.

Do we go to the cemetery?

We might. It will depend on the time of day, (it closes at sunset) and the available public space in the burying point.

Are your tours scary?

Honestly, that will be for you to decide. We do cover some very dark subject matter. History, especially violent history, is not for the feint of heart. Human beings are capable of truly atrocious acts.
